There hasn't been much time in the kitchen this week, thankfully I had some meals to pull from the freezer and some chick peas for lunch time hummus. I managed to sew a new apron after I think one blew off the line and across a field (or two?).
It feels unusual to post about anything new about the shop. It hasn't been getting much attention for new stockings but all other areas of life have been really (really) busy. I do have some new prints to stock and also a new absorbency. I've decided to add an option for ultra-absorbent cores. This core option is made using 2 layers of bamboo fleece and 2 layers of flannel. This will be ideal for very heavy flow and also postpartum. I'll be adding a couple of these ultra core pads to the shop tomorrow. I'll also add this option for made to order merino wool backed pads.

"Each day I find myself snapping a picture or two in the kitchen - a pile of ingredients, a table waiting for us to gather around, a sink full of soapy dishes, a cup of tea, dinner as it comes out of the oven - simple, everyday moments in the kitchen.
I've decided to bring some wool backing into the shop again. I used to offer wool backed pads but the fabric climbed to such a high cost I stopped offering it. The wool I was buying years ago was thick and best suited to serged pads. This new wool is beautiful, it's 97% merino wool and 3% spandex and has been milled in the USA. It makes a nice trim pad and it is so soft and has some stretch too. Wool is a natural breathable fibre that offers natural moisture protection.

To prep this fabric I've washed and dried it on hot three times, this allows you to machine wash your pads on cool. After a cool water wash you can put your wool backed pads in to the dryer on a low temperature or hang them to dry.

To test out interest I'll be offering some mad-to-order pads in the shop, hopefully I'll be able to continue to offer wool as yet another option for you!
I've been working on the 11 inch size again. Selfishly, I wanted this size to be more like my own favourite 12 inch style...a bit curvier and a bit more flared. I need to re-design the shape of the core to match those flares, and it needs to be a tiny bit narrower, then it will be ready for

knitting:

I'm well past the sleeve division on my Heathered cardigan. I've had it on my mind for a long time and was adamant that it be a sweater that will get lots of use so I wanted the fit to be just right. I got my gauge on US 6, but then I started knitting and doubting myself....thinking I'm much bigger than I actually am. I should have continued to knit it on the 6's, instead I jumped to my US 7's. I just hope it doesn't block to be much too big. The pattern is very well written and I've been reading a KAL I found for this pattern and it's been tremendously helpful.

Also, I think I'll be casting on one or two pilot hats for a customer. Both projects will allow for some easy knitting over the upcoming March break.

reading:

I started The Pilot's Wife this week, it's a much easier read than my last novel.
I've been feeling dissatisfied with my latest knitting projects. I took a break and organized my most often used knitting notions (looking at my picture I see that project bags would also make my knitting basket tidier). I decided to re-visit a simple pattern I knit for my daughters third birthday. I wrongly blamed the pattern and have realized it was the yarn that made for the poor fit of my first In Threes sweater. I'm moving along well on this version, I'm going to add sleeves to extend the project. There's also a swatch for a Heathered Cardigan and I'm really (really) excited to start it.

knitting:

I'm focusing on one project for now, a mama vertebrae for myself. I was very careful figuring out my yardage but I'm still worrying about having enough yarn! I've also been frogging the rainbow sweater from last year. It just turned out too boxy (my fault, not the pattern) so I'm going to make the yarn into something new. As my youngest enters a new size range, (out of the toddler sizes and into girls) I feel almost justified to buy a new pattern. First though I need to organize my knitting basket knitting tools.

reading:

I found a copy of The God of Small Things at a thrift store. I'm very early into it so there's not much to say yet....I'm sure it will be better than my last read!
This morning after snowshoeing and starting some rice pudding I finished up some wet bags I had started over the weekend. There's new pad wrappers too, in black and white chevron. Some of these prints I haven't used for wet bags yet, I'm excited to see what you think!

There's a big (really big) stack of pads to sew over the next week or so too. For now though, there will be new wet bags and wrappers going into the shop.

::Knitting::

A Rowhouse Hat, it's my first stranded project and I love it. I deviated from the pattern a bit so that I could use the yarn I had available. A great knit and I'll be making many for gifts.

I've since cast on a Mama Vertebrae for myself, and even though I really need to spend time on mending and sewing things for my family.

::Reading::

I'm not reading anything wonderful at the moment, I'm finishing up a book that's just ok. It's good for now, since this book isn't interesting enough to keep me up late reading!

Last night I read over the new (free!) sewing pattern by Deer & Doe for the Plantain T-Shirt. I'm pretty excited about this one, it looks like a pattern I can manage it and it's just the kind of shirt I would go for in a store. And look you can even make it into a dress!
Here's a quick little custom order from this week, it was nice to work with all these bright fabrics.

After getting through a lot of my fabric stash it was nice to add a few new fabrics to the selection, (without feeling guilty about it!) I would like to add a few more, but at the same time it's easier to manage a smaller selection of fabrics in my little sewing space.

knitting~

I'm working on a hat for myself, but I'm not sure about the pattern-yarn-me match so I've been going slowly with it. I'm just starting a little cardigan for Rowan using some yarn we dyed before Christmas. I've dyed yarn many times, but this time I used the tutorial at Kathryn Ivy and found it worked really well, even on the super wash yarn I used. The colour is bright and held with little to no dye coming off at the end. Rowan was able to tell me the proper rainbow colour order from a song from the Cat in the Hat show.
I'm re-reading The Handmade Marketplace right now, hoping it will give me some more ideas for my business. I'll be taking something else from the book shelf very soon though.

We're finally settling into our 'normal' routine after the holidays. My Color Affection shawl kept me sane(ish) over the holidays. I've had the pattern for a long time but it worried me for some reason. I gathered up the courage after getting some yarn on sale from Knitpicks, and really it was simple. One step at a time, follow the pattern (plus read through lots of notes on Ravelry!). It came off the needles in Sunday night while I watched Dowton Abbey and here it's being blocked where my 10 year old son said 'that's pretty' and my partner asked, 'how did you do that?' Of course he didn't really want to know but it's nice that I can trip his logical mind up a bit!
Getting back to normal means some pad sewing too, I'll be stocking these tomorrow. I've avoided buying fabric for a couple months and I'm happy that I've been able to really get a lot of fabric used up. Now it really is time for some new prints though, I'll be going out on Thursday to see what I can find.
~finishing up a Little Red as a gift for my daughter, she'll love this.
~finishing up another Pilot Cap to add to the shop, I wish I had the knitting skills to make these for my own babies. I do enjoy adding them to my shop when I get the chance and some suitable yarn.
I like these wool vests for school days so she has a nice wool layer over her core, but she's not sweltering in a long sleeve sweater. I also put them on her on cold nights as an extra layer over flannel pjs, that girl has a hard time keeping blankets on her!
~I'll be trying this hat out over the holidays too
~Dissolution my mind is often drifting when reading this book, I hear the ending is worth it though.
~Circular Knitting Workshop, this book is a gift but I'm taking a little look through it to make sure it's suitable, it looks like a wonderful resource. I hope to add it to my book shelf too. I thought since I can knit in the round on DPN's and use the magic loop I was all good, but I have a lot to learn too!
I'll be working on these pads this week, the cores are sewn in and now I'll move along to the fleece cutting. I'm just waiting on a snap order to arrive. I'll be changing the ribbon indicating absorbency to a fun little snap that will indicate the absorbency.

I hope the snaps arrive soon so I can include this batch. If not though I'll go ahead and use the ribbons on these pads too, I want to get them listed by Friday. Several of these prints (the trees, and leaves and candy cane stripes) are end of the line prints.

I cast on Portside earlier this week, it's just what I need right now. Round and round knitting with increases every other row. The cast on was a little different than I expected being an adult sweater (rather than a child's, which I'm more accustomed to knitting). It will make for a nicer fit and more efficient yarn usage. I'll get a lot of use from a this tunic. It would be very easy to adapt the pattern for a cardigan stye too. Since things need to be easy I'm reading Letters from WIngfield Farm, it's light and entertaining. The author, Dan Needles used to write a column for Harrowsmith magazine, which has sadly ceased publication.
My feelings on tomatoes go sort of like this....

we go outside and happily pick all these beautiful tomatoes and think what a great year it has been for the garden. I bring them inside and give them a wash and set them here and there around the kitchen and living room (there's not enough room in the kitchen alone) and then they start to feel like clutter and work to be done....they're nagging me.

Most often I roast our tomatoes and freeze them, sometimes I can them. I admit my patience for canning tomatoes runs low, this year I managed about 20 pints. Thankfully I have a mother in law who enjoys (tolerates?) canning tomatoes and she likes to share. I slice them all up, Amish Paste, Big Rainbows, and Purple Prince and whatever else we planted this year. The tomato jungle was so thick I can't read my planting signs. They get tossed in the cookie sheets and baking dishes, they mingle with onion and garlic, basil, olive oil and sometimes some balsamic vinegar and I kinda curse all their work.

They roast for a bit, they smell so good and they come out of the oven all delicious and I'm thankful for all those tomatoes and all the work they bring. Over the weekend we discovered they're delicious with hummus, and this soup recipe is what led to my love of roasted tomatoes.

Nicely enough we started and ended our school break at a favorite beach with my sister and her children. The perfect kind of beach; a beautiful view, some sand and lots of water. Before school ended in June I made myself a short list of priorities for the summer.

1. time with family
2. food preservation
3. keeping the shop filled up

Over all it worked, the summer break went pretty well. It was very full and busy. I said yes to many more functions and events than was within my comfort level, but all was ok and memories were made.

Our garden has never produced so much, the freezer and shelves of canning are filling up (still with much more to add). Sadly, all 20 of our chicks were killed by a weasel in July. It was upsetting, we've done so well with our little groups of chickens we weren't expecting this, it was upsetting and defeating. We've decided to take a break from raising chickens, we've found an affordable source of farm raised eggs and at this point in our lives we need to focus our energy on other projects. I think there will be more livestock in our lives over the years, and I need to remember that just because it's not happening right now doesn't mean it won't happen.

I managed to keep the shop active too, thank you for all your support over the summer. I've got big ideas for the fall and find my mind is very full these days. Our youngest will be starting kindergarten next week. I have so many mixed feelings about it but she is so excited and at 4 1/2 years old, she's ready for it. Rowan is bright and loves to learn and make friends, I think kindergarten will suit her well. I will continue to be a stay at home mom, but my role is changing. My days at home will now be more structured (even productive?) and I will be able to be more involved in my children's school which has always been important to me, but being home with Rowan has made volunteering challenging. I'll be able to put a lot more energy in County Cloth Creations and after starting this business over seven years ago, the opportunity to give County Cloth my full attention is really exciting!
